With regard to your question how old is the "fresh" fruit and veg in supermarkets, they can be up to a year old!

Aussies love their fruit and veg but seasonal shortages and the odd devastating cyclone can sometimes put our favourite items out of reach.

A Current Affair has conducted a nation-wide spot check to find out which retailers are offering the best value and also the best quality fresh produce.

A team of shoppers were set upon grocery stores with identical lists of items to purchase. Here are the results

Sydney

The country’s biggest retail market is representative of the nation as a whole. Woolworths is the dominant player, followed closely by Coles with cut-price retailers Aldi and Franklins vying for the rest of the market.

But the German discounter undercuts them all.

Coles came in second, slightly cheaper than Wollies.

Pears and tomatoes were 40 per cent cheaper at Aldi than the big two.

Melbourne

In Melbourne Aldi again came out in front for value, with nothing much between the big.

Potatoes at Aldi were just a dollar a kilo instead of $3.88 at the other two.

And Oranges were nearly half the price at Woolies compared to Coles.

Brisbane

And in Brisbane it’s the same story with Aldi ....but Woolies proved to be ten per cent more expensive than Coles. Surprisingly across Queensland, Apples and Oranges were cheapest at Coles, even beating Aldi!
