Masterchef favourite Matt Preston is the latest celebrity to use his star power to conquer councils around Australia. He’s successfully opposed a multi-million dollar development with an impassioned argument about privacy - joining the ranks of celebrities not afraid to get their hands dirty when it comes to local issues.
Response from Stonnington Mayor John Chandler:
"The terms of a restrictive covenant over land in Malvern were affirmed in a Supreme Court of Victoria decision handed down last week.
"The land owner applied to the Supreme Court to remove the covenant on the land to allow a development to take place. It is understood that this resulted in objections from 30 surrounding residents and the Supreme Court upheld the neighbouring objectors’ arguments, indicating the covenant was not obsolete and should remain in place.
"This is a case that directly relies on a covenant which has been in place since 1901, which only applies to that parcel of land. Council has no role in and has not been involved in this process."
