Lady Gaga has urged Australian leaders to "get on with it" in legalising gay marriage, in an interview with A Current Affair.
In the first TV appearance of her Australian visit, the Born This Way singer spoke passionately about gay rights and marriage equality.
"Let’s inspire them [politicians] to be modern … it’s 2011, get on with it."
Last week in her home country, New York become the sixth US state to legalise gay marriage, while in Australia NSW Labor has voiced support for same-sex marriage but has delayed a vote on the issue until December.
Lady Gaga was also full of praise for Australian voters in choosing a female head of state in Prime Minister Julia Gillard.
"I think it is wonderful you have a female running the place — I wish it was that way in America," she said.
Her message to victims of bullying was to embrace what makes them unique.
"I was terribly bullied and used to cry in my mother's bathroom ... know the problem is not you, it is inside of them."
"If you get that kind of attention, it's because you're unique."
"You will never have a pop singer that cares more about you than I do," she said.
The US pop singer performed an acoustic version of her hit Edge of Glory from inside a perspex box, in her much-anticipated performance for A Current Affair.
"I love performance art," she said. "What you saw today was a little installation piece, just for you."
Lady Gaga said she was keeping a low profile between appearances while in Australia.
"I had some Jameson last night and looked at the Opera House out my window for like three hours, and I don’t feel sorry about it at all."
