ACA: Have Your Say

Cat wars

, Prev Next

'David' from western Sydney has had enough of cats in his neighbourhood and has launched an online petition to demand the council take action on patrolling out-of-control moggies.

Watch the video

"They wake us up at night, scratch your car, tom cats spray and mark their territory, spread disease and poop in your garden," he says.

But his online petition www.catcontrol.org has raised the ire of cat lovers and now they have their claws out.

The laws are slightly different from council to council, but for most there is no requirement to prevent cats from roaming the streets.

However, David's asking for cats to be locked up at night.

"Dogs have to be restrained, cats ought to be restrained," he says.

What do you think? Should cats remain free to roam neighbourhoods? Or should the council crack down on owners? Tell us your thoughts below and we will post yout comments online.

You might laugh at people who say cats kill native animals. I say isn't it better we take control of even one thing that is killing our native animalls than nothing? We all need some where to live, and there are only a limited number of caves (this is i'm guessing your alternative to houses) ... so yes we need to build houses... not much we can do about that. But as cat owners we can take responsibility for the animals under our care. How hard is it really to keep your cat inside? Mine are very happy healthy cats who never go out side because i care not only about their safety, my neighbours but yes native animals. Which i'm sure loads of people have seen killed by cats. Also I have never hit an animal in my car!
Haha, really you people who say cats kill wildlife really make me laugh. I want anyone who had comment here to think of if they have ever hit an animal with their car. Think of how many birds lost their homes when your homes where built. Really people WE ARE THE ONES KILLING OUR WILDLIFE, so why don't you stop blaming poor defenseless animals and start blaming yourself.
With the exception of working dogs & pure bred animals with papers, people who do not spay or neuter their pet should be fined heavily. They are the cause of pet over population.
I love all animals but lets get one thing straight, cats are natural preditors and love to hunt, especially at night, responsible owners keep their cats inside, unresponsible owners couldn't care less and because of their attitude councils should fine 'them' not blame the cat for doing what it knows best...I own two dogs who have to be registered and they are picked up if found wantering why doesn't the same apply to cat owners?
1st of all, MOST suburbs have stray cats. 2nd you speak with a very sharp tongue, making wild accusations and assumptions which are baseless. If this was America you'd be in therapy, not the poor person who is standing up for himself and his property on which other resident's cats are actually trespassing. There are also people, including children who have very serious allergies to cats which should feel safe IN THEIR OWN BACK YARD..LETS FORGET ABOUT THE WILDLIFE ISSUE FOR A BIT..What gives cat owners the right to allow their pets to roam other resident's properties, peeing, *** on their outdoor furniture, walls, gardens..lounge on the same, knocking things over, scratching things INCLUDING YOUR CAR BONETT and then have a cat-fight outside your bedroom window at some ungodly hour of the night screaming and squealing like mad ????? FOR GOD'S SAKE , WHERE'S THE COMMON SENSE ???? THIS IS TRESPASSING AND DAMAGING PROPERTY.if I want a cat Ill get one but DON'T FORCE YOUR PETS ON ME!
To all the cat lovers on here who are saying "locking up cats is bad" and "the website owner is a ***," you obviously don't love your cats very much. If you care about your animals, you'd keep them indoors and outside on a lead just like a dog. Its a matter of teaching these things while they are young. I cried when I ran over a cat recently. I didn't mean to, but at night in a neighborhood thats not well lit, you can't see an animal darting into the street. I had no timne to stop by the time I saw the animal and I felt awful afterwards that it could have been someone's pet. If you actually care about your animals, you'd not allow them to go out unsupervised or without some sort of lead. Its not only for their own good and safety, but its also to keep others in your neighborhood content as well. What a self centered and *** thing to say, that your neighbor should MOVE so you can keep your cat outside. If you want animals, learn to care for them properly.
We have a cat who is spoilt rotten, she is inside, desexed, microchipped. People need to be responsible cat owners. I hate the Tom cats that fight outside our window and poop in our garden. Cats are like children they should be inside when its dark, not roaming the streets causing a nuiance to others....
This argument is ridicullous, cats aint the only thing that keeps people awake, *** in your garden and wees on your door. What about the small children and the bloody drunken teenagers that come rampaging down your street at any time of the day? Im sure ive caught the neibours kids craping on our lawn, and leaving beer bottles full of pee next to it. Also the nice tire tracks through our greenery. And about small children, have you ever heard "NO MOMMY I DONT WANNA GO TO SCHOOL, EEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!" around eight thirty in the morning, and you work in the hospitality industry with unrealistic hours. Cmon guys, we are whinging about nothing. If you REALLY hate them cats that much, wait outside with a shovel for the pesky *** to come along. I do. And I own cats. Put in some hard work.
I have a female cat, which is de-sexed, micro-chipped and kept inside at night. It's not always pleasant. Particularly on warm nights, she sits at the doors and persistently whines for hours. But it is for her safety, and others sanity! On countless occasions, our entire household has been woken by male cats in our yard, at our doors, howling. It is irritating to us, and frightens our cat. Keep your cat inside at night!
In the past I lost a cat to Feline Immunodefiency Virus (Feline Aids) my Vet said it was most probably due to the fact that I let him roam outdoors at night and thus he was a street fighter with other cats. He was constantly bitten & has scratches on him, being affected by another cat. His death was slow & awful, he lost his bodily functions & began bleeding from the bowels etc. I ended up having to put him down as he was suffering terribly. My cat I have now is a house cat & very happy and healthy. Plus I dont have other street cats hanging around my house taunting him and waiting to pick a fight.
