Shopper Squad: Frozen Fish

, Next

Fish is a superfood — full of protein and Omega 3. But what if it's frozen and comes in a cardboard box?

We've put ten of the most popular brands to the test to find out which is best for:

  • nutrition
  • taste
  • value

We've also been on a mission to find out how much fish is actually contained in crumbed fish fillets and fish fingers.

Nutritionist Joanna Macmillan-Price says frozen fish can be good for us — if we know what we're eating.

"There is a difference, you can see if one is flaking you can see there is a real whole fish fillet," she says.

    NUTRITION

    Winners:

    Fish fillets

  • Coles brand
  • I & J
  • Birds Eye

    Fish fingers

  • Sealord
  • Captain's Choice

"They tell us what type of fish it is so that reassures me and I am not eating something like shark," she says.

    FISH CONTENT

    Winners:

    Fish fillets

  • Birds Eye

    Fish fingers

  • Captain's Choice

Christopher Zinn from consumer group choice says a recent survey found the actual fish content can vary from 100 percent to less than 50 percent, which also means less Omega 3.

"Some of them are only 50 percent fish so that means the actual cost per bite of fish goes up and also in terms of those omega 3s that people want more and more of," he says.

    VALUE FOR MONEY

    Winners:

  • Woolworths Home Brand

    Extra tips:

Christopher Zinn says make sure you look at the label.

"That will tell you some of these will have higher amounts of fish in them —be it fish mince or reformed bits of fish — than others and that's where the value will probably lie," he says.

Joanna Macmillan-Price suggests making your own fish fingers because it's easy, healthier and tastes better.

"They are far more nutritious and you know where the fish is coming from. There are none of those extras and additives and flavour enhances and flour going in there," she says.
