Should you save money on your groceries when you use the self-serve check-out?

More than 8000 Aussie shoppers say yes.

Statement from Woolworths:

"Our customers have embraced our self-service checkouts with around half now using them.

"But of course if they'd prefer being looked after by one of our great operators they're welcome to use one of our staffed checkouts.

"We won't be offering a discount to use self-service checkouts but we will continue to offer the choice to our customers.

"Where we have installed self service checkouts we have maintained the same number of staff to continue to deliver great service to our customers."

Statement from Coles:

"We do not reduce the number of team members in-store when we install self-serve checkouts.

"Team members are assigned to other customer service roles around the store, in order to provide great service for our customers and meet the specific needs of the local community.

"This means there are no cost savings for Coles, just a faster and more convenient way to pay for those customers who choose to self-serve checkouts.

"Coles is always working on ways to provide better value for its customers.

"Coles has recorded cumulative food and liquor price deflation of 4 percent over the past five years, compared to the ABS measure of national inflation of 12.2 percent over the same period."
