A Sydney mother has been left outraged after she learned her daughter's killer will be allowed outside of his prison for day release.

Lauren Hickson was just four years old when she was assaulted and killed by Neville Towner by the Nepean River in 1989.

Now, one of NSW's most notorious killers could be allowed some of the privileges of freedom despite his life sentence.
