Best phone plans

Time to dial up to a new phone plan, but you don't know where to start?

A Current Affair has made the calls for you with our special buyer's guide to the most affordable phone deals.

Over 55s
Telstra: $40 plan including free handset with big buttons/font. This includes a choice of free three minutes calls to one number or free 20 minutes calls within one hour of the day.
Optus: $30 'my time' plan. This includes 45 untimed calls within Australia.
Vodafone: $40 plan with $300 call value, unlimited texts or unlimited calls to Vodafone numbers.
Amaysim: Pay as you go plan. This includes national calls/texts for 12 cents, international calls for 6 cents/minute, Facebook/Twitter and you can choose pre or postpaid.

25-55 years
Telstra: $60 'everyday connect' plan. This includes $600 worth of calls and MMS, unlimited texts and 1GB of data.
Optus: $60 'postpaid' deal with a Samsung Galaxy S3. This gives you unlimited calls to Optus numbers, unlimited texts to any network and 1.5GB of data.
Vodafone: $50 plan with a $500 calls value, 750MB of data, unlimited text or unlimited calls to Vodafone numbers.
Amaysim: $39.90 deal with unlimited national calls, text, MMS and voicemail. Plus, it gives you 4GB of data, international calls for six cents/minutes and Facebook/Twitter access.

Teens
Telstra: $30 prepaid 'encore' cap. This includes $250 credit for 30 days for talk/text, plus 400MG of data and free talk/text from 6pm-6am.
Optus: $40 prepaid social plan. This includes unlimited calls to Optus mobiles, unlimited text, Facebook/Twitter and 1GB of data.
Vodafone: $30 prepaid cap. This include $450 call value, unlimited text and 500MB of data.
Amaysim: $19.90 flexi plan. This includes $19.90 credit, 9 cents/minute national calls, Facebook/Twitter and free calls/text to Amaysim numbers.

Kids
Telstra: $30 prepaid 'encore' cap. This includes $250 credit for 30 days for talk/text, plus 400MG of data and free talk/text from 6pm-6am.
Optus: Long expiry prepaid.
Vodafone: $20 per 365 day recharge plan. This includes a $20 call value plus 50 minutes of free calls.
Amaysim: The 'as you go' deal. This includes national calls and texts for 12 cents, plus a choice of pre or postpaid.

Kogan recommends its $29 plan for all demographics. It includes unlimited calls, unlimited text and 6GB of data per month. You can buy a smartphone for $149.
