Odd couple

Meet the grandmother who was granted her own pension, even though she still shares the family home with husband of more than 40 years.

A tribunal found the couple live separate lives under the one roof.

Here's what the General Manager of the Department of Human Services, Hank Jongen, had to say:

The Department makes decisions on people's eligibility for payments based on social security and family assistance law, and the information people provide to us at the time they lodge their claim.

The AAT reconsidered the Department's decision, and based on the totality of the relationship and the weight of a number of relevant factors, which included financial aspects of the relationship, made a different decision. This case was decided on its individual merits.

We are currently considering the AAT’s decision.

Generally, if someone disagrees with a decision made, they have the right to request a review of that decision, and we encourage people to explore these options if they are not happy.
