Instead of spending his time at school, eight-year-old Josh spends most of his days in hospital.

He has battled cancer twice already and visits the hospital every couple of weeks for chemotherapy — unless his family car doesn't break down.

A Current Affair wanted to make sure Josh's birthday was one he would never forget, so we handed his mum Alison the keys to a brand new car, along with a boot full of presents.

Alison came out to tell Josh's story for only one reason.

The family aren't after financial donations, they want to encourage people to donate blood.

She said Josh has had to wait in hospital for blood products to come in because they aren't readily available.

To donate blood, visit the Australian Red Cross Blood Service
