I'm not surprised, My water company takes me for a run every time I get a bill, my sewerage costs more than my usage

This Melbourne family claims their water usage hasn’t changed in years, so they were quite shocked when they realized their bill had - by 1500 percent. After exhausting all possible causes they are demanding an explanation from their water company.

Yarra Valley Water statement

"Our meter readers read the water meter and we identified the unusually high usage and notified the customer of this.

"Following a call from the customer we suggested the customer check the meter for leakage. The customer checked the meter reading and reported there was no leakage. We have had the water meter independently tested and those tests show that the meter is accurately registering the water flows through the meter. Subsequent meter readings have shown that water usage has returned to more normal levels.

"As an act of good faith we have adjusted the bill and charged at the lowest rate for the water. We are happy for the customer to come back to us to discuss this further or go through the independent Energy and Water Ombudsman.

"Apart from leaking water pipes, unusually high water usage can also often be caused by water theft, faulty appliances such as leaking toilets or evaporative coolers, or through defective irrigation systems. We do encourage customers to monitor their water usage regularly."
