A new way to treat arthritis

There are all kinds of products that claim to treat arthritis, from lotions to potions, pills and elixirs. But the latest treatment that claims to treat the painful symptoms of arthritis is ceramic clothing.

The 'Back on Track' clothing range claims to relieve the pain associated with arthritis, by virtue of the fabric which contains very fine ceramic particles.

Peter Lane, the spruiker for the clothing range says arthritis sufferers have experienced great results, particularly those with osteoarthritis.

He says the clothing is effective because of its ability to reflect the body’s own heat in the form of infrared rays.

"The ceramic particles, by reflecting the infrared rays, are actually stimulating your body molecules underneath the fabric," Lane says.

He claims the clothing stimulates circulation which assists pain relief.

However, the Nine Network's Sports Medic, Dr Peter Larkins warns there's not enough evidence yet that ceramic clothing will do a better job than existing therapeutic garments.

"I think anyone that's got arthritis needs to be sure they get an appropriate medical diagnosis made as to what their condition is. At the end of the day their doctor might recommend they use a heat retaining product as part of the conventional treatment with that. But don't try to be your doctor," Dr Larkins says.

A Current Affair got three arthritis sufferers, to test the products. Dianne Linsell, Samantha Canfield and Jenny Woods trialled the clothing for 10 days. Linsell and Canfield said they noticed a reduction in pain, however Woods said the clothing made no difference.

Lane says the clothing will not cure arthritis, only relieve the symptoms.

"What infrared therapy does, is by reducing inflammation it reduces pain — that's all. All that we purport to do with the products, that's all the products do, but the results that we're getting are phenomenal in that regard," he says.
