Thousands of dollars in government grants are available.

There are thousands of dollars up for grabs in government grants — and everyone can cash in.

Here are some top tips from Grace Johnston, author of 101 Ways to Get Free Dollars from the Government, on where and how to get your hands on easy money.

  • Install new or replacement insulation and you could be eligible for a $1600 grant under the Energy Efficient Homes Package.
  • Replace your old electric hot water system and there is another rebate available for $1600.
  • Most parents know about family and baby bonuses...but you can also get an immunisation allowance through Centrelink of $122 per child — and you don't even have to immunise the kids to collect.
  • Budding sporting champions who compete at a state or national level can apply to the Australian Sports Commission for a $500 payment. If you are a woman you might be able to collect up to $5000.
  • In times of crisis, help is available as never before...like a Centrelink bereavement allowance of about $600 a fortnight for up to three months.
  • Centrelink also has a widow's allowance of up $500 a fortnight? And you don't even have to be a widow to collect. Just over 40, not working, divorced, married but seperated or defacto and seperated.
  • Widows wanting to go back to work may also be eligible for a one-off payment of $208 for re-training.
